GPT-4.5 is out, and it might seem underwhelming

After months of speculation, OpenAI has officially unveiled GPT-4.5 Orion, its strongest AI model to date. While not a radical departure from its predecessor, GPT-4.5 introduces improved natural interaction, better emotional intelligence, and increased computational efficiency.

Sam Altman highlights that this model is not designed to crash benchmarks, but rather enhance a different kind of intelligence. GPT-4.5 is advanced by scaling unsupervised learning, which allows it to be better at recognizing patterns, draw connections, and generate creative insights without reasoning.

Here’s what special about GPT-4.5:

  • More Natural and Intuitive Conversations: GPT-4.5 is designed to feel more human-like in its responses, reducing robotic phrasing and improving engagement. Sam said that interacting with GPT-4.5 is the first time he feels like talking to a thoughtful person—a major leap in how AI understands and generates language.
  • Improved Emotional Intelligence & Steerability: OpenAI has enhanced alignment techniques, allowing the model to better interpret user intent and adjust responses dynamically. AI-generated advice and suggestions will align more closely with user needs and it can detect and respond to emotional cues more effectively. For example, it will comfort you, instead of giving lengthy advice, when you say you’re sad.
  • Multimodal Features: The new model supports canvas, web search, and file upload, but not yet advanced voice mode.
  • Enhanced Knowledge & Hallucination Reduction: OpenAI trained GPT-4.5 with expanded datasets while applying new filtering and alignment techniques to minimize factual inaccuracies. Internal testing shows a decrease in hallucination rate compared to GPT-4.0 and better performance in general knowledge tasks.

That’s the good part. The not-so-good part is that this model is extremely expensive, costing $75 per 1M tokens, especially when compared to other high-performing models. Additionally, the launch of GPT-4.5 has strained OpenAI’s GPU resources, which is why the model is currently only available to Pro users and developers, while Plus users will have to wait a few more weeks for access.

Considering both price and performance, it’s understandable why developers find the model underwhelming. However, for app users, this remains a notable upgrade in terms of AI experience.

Your AI Team: Platform Updates

  • Sora is now available to UK and EU users.
  • Meta is planning a stand-alone AI chatbot app.
  • Copilot gets a MacOS app.
  • ElevenLabs is launching its own speech-to-text model.
  • Google Gemini users can access the AI chatbot from your lock screen.
