OpenAI’s Agent for Deep Research

How long has it been since I last talked about Perplexity AI? Perplexity was a game-changer when it first launched, and it’s still holding strong—especially now with its integration of DeepSeek R1. But its core advantage, delivering a synthesized response to any search query, is now facing serious competition from OpenAI’s latest release.

OpenAI has just introduced Deep Research, an AI agent built to take research to the next level. Unlike traditional chatbots that simply generate responses, Deep Research autonomously plans and executes multi-step research tasks—essentially mimicking the work of a human analyst. It doesn’t just answer questions; it pulls from various online sources, critically evaluates them, and compiles structured, detailed reports.

Think of Deep Research as the love child of OpenAI’s o3 model (known for its superior reasoning) and its advanced web browsing capabilities—delivering real-time, citation-backed insights. Axios called it a promising intern.

Here’s what makes Deep Research stand out:

• Autonomous Research Planning: The AI autonomously plans and executes multi-step research tasks, determining the optimal trajectory to gather necessary data. 
• Ask follow-up questions: Giving off a real analyst vibe, it will ask you questions to clarify your request before conducting the research.
• Multi-Modal Data Analysis: It interprets and analyzes various data types, including text, images, and PDFs, enabling a holistic understanding of complex topics. 
• Comprehensive Reporting: Within 5 to 30 minutes, Deep Research synthesizes information from diverse online sources to generate detailed reports, a process that would typically take a human several hours or even days. 
• Transparent Process with Citations: The tool provides a summary of its research process in a sidebar, complete with citations, allowing users to verify and reference the information easily.

Deep Research is integrated into the ChatGPT interface. It is now available for pro users, and will soon become available for team and plus users.
