Gemini Robotics is the next-gen humanoid robot
Google DeepMind has made significant progress in bringing advanced AI models from the digital realm into solving tasks in the physical world. They introduced two new AI models, based on Gemini 2.0: Gemini Robotics and Gemini Robotics-ER.
This new initiative brings Google’s Gemini AI models into robotics, equipping robots with advanced reasoning and real-world problem-solving abilities. Here’s what makes Gemini Robotics a game-changer:
- Advanced AI for Robotics: Gemini Robotics is based on Gemini 2.0 and extends its multimodal reasoning (text, images, audio, video) into the physical world for robot control.
- Gemini Robotics is designed for direct robot control. It takes in visual and language information and directly outputs the actions a robot should take. Think of it as an all-in-one model for action.
- Gemini Robotics-ER focuses on enhancing the robot's understanding of the world, especially its spatial environment. While it can also perform end-to-end control, it's designed to improve the robot's "embodied reasoning" and can be integrated with existing robot control systems.
- Generalist AI Capabilities: Gemini Robotics demonstrates generality by adapting to novel situations and solving a wide variety of tasks it has never seen before in training.
- Real-World Adaptation: Unlike traditional hardcoded robots, it can adapt to new situations and tasks dynamically. It has the ability to continuously monitor its surroundings, detect changes to its environment or instructions, and adjust its actions accordingly, even quickly replanning if an object slips or is moved.
- End-to-End Robotic Control: Handles perception, state estimation, spatial reasoning, planning, and even code generation for real-world execution.
- Self-Improving AI: Learns from human instructions, video demonstrations, and in-context learning, reducing the need for extensive manual programming.
- Better Success Rates: In an end-to-end setting, Gemini Robotics-ER achieves a 2x-3x success rate compared to Gemini 2.0.

This isn’t the first time AI has stepped into the world of robotics. OpenAI has also been collaborating with Figure to “give a body” to its AI models. As these advancements continue, they bring both excitement and uncertainty. Are we on the brink of a future where robots seamlessly assist in our daily lives, or does this rapid evolution still feel a bit uncanny?
