Let’s dive in!
ChatGPT Canvas will change the way you write and code forever
It’s funny to think that only 5 editions ago, in Stay Ahead #40, I mentioned how if there is one thing that makes me choose Claude over ChatGPT, it would be the Artifacts. Then in Stay Ahead #42 we have Copilot Pages (but only for teams and businesses).
And now, ChatGPT is up to the game with ChatGPT Canvas. ChatGPT 4o can pull its response in Canvas, a separate window where you can further work on and further your work.
Canvas is designed specifically to aid the writing and coding process. It has different shortcuts that are tailored to the needs of each task.
Writing shortcuts
- Suggest edits: Generates comments on how your writing can be better
- Adjust the length: Makes your document shorter or longer
- Reading level: How simplified or complex should the content be, from Kindergarten to Graduate School
- Final polish: Checks for grammar, clarity, and consistency
- Add emojis
Coding shortcuts
- Code review: Inline suggestions on how to improve the code
- Port to a language: Translates your code into JavaScript, TypeScript, Python, Java, C++, or PHP.
- Fix bugs: Detects and rewrites error codes.
- Add comments: Adds inline comments to explain each function in the code
- Add logs: Inserts print statement to make the code easier to understand and be debugged
Other things you can do with Canvas
- Create Rich Content: Draft essays, blog posts, and emails in a rich text editor.
- Code Editor: Write, test, and refine code with built-in syntax highlighting across various programming languages.
- Switch Between Formats: Flexibly transition between different content types—text, code, or more—to suit your needs.
- Ongoing collaboration: Highlight specific sentences or sections, and ask ChatGPT to fix or improve them directly. ChatGPT can also comment on your document to help you refine your work.
- Revision Control: Edit and refine documents while keeping track of your original ideas or earlier versions.
In comparison, we would say here are the notable features that make Claude Artifacts, ChatGPT Canvas, and Copilot Pages distinctive to each other, catering to different needs:
- Artifacts: You can preview what the code looks like when it runs.
- Canvas: You have more aiding features for coding and debugging.
- Pages: You can invite your team to work on the same Page and call internal documents.
Most ChatGPT plus, team, and Enterprise users should now have access to ChatGPT 4o with canvas. OpenAI also plans to get this feature to free users when it’s out of beta.
To OpenAI, here is a suggestion for your next update. ;)
