Should Employees Hold "Secret" Second Jobs?

Happy New Year! 🎇❤️

This edition is special, as it marks the first working day of 2025. I wish you all the very best for the year ahead, filled with opportunities, growth, unshakable resilience, and meaningful purpose!

Reflecting on 2024, once again, I’d love to express my deepest gratitude to the incredible and amazing FlexOS team—the unsung heroes whose creativity, dedication, and passion make the impossible possible.

In the final edition of 2024, I asked what your priority for 2025 would be. Many of you shared thoughtful responses, making the focus clear: "Do more with less".

This mantra, echoed by our Future Work Alumnus Lars Schmidt and reinforced by Anthony Onesto, encapsulates the challenges and opportunities ahead. AI and automation will undoubtedly drive efficiency, but success lies in integrating these tools thoughtfully while safeguarding the employee experience and well-being.

The challenge for HR leaders is to go beyond productivity—to achieve better with less—without losing sight of the people who matter most. I know, it’s a tall order.

Luckily, to make things a little easier, this week’s edition brings you Josh Bersin’s data-driven review of 2024 and 10 actionable lessons from our Future Work experts to guide you through the year ahead. Let’s tackle 2025 together!

FEATURED PODCAST

As we step into 2025, it’s worth reflecting on the major HR milestones of 2024. Kathi Enderes and The Josh Bersin Company highlighted how 2024 brought significant challenges and opportunities, reshaping the HR landscape.

The year was marked by political polarization, labor shortages, and an accelerated embrace of AI in HR practices, with a focus on addressing elevated employee expectations.

AI became a transformative force, with predictions from Josh Bersin emphasizing that every HR practice must evolve to add business value. Additionally, deskless workers gained renewed attention, as brands like McDonald’s and Walmart leveraged AI to address their unique challenges. Managers proved pivotal to organizational success, with companies prioritizing tailored development and human-centered leadership to navigate the hybrid work environment.

Talent acquisition shifted its focus, with leaders recognizing the need to transform from fulfillment centers to strategic functions. Organizations like Ericsson highlighted the importance of adopting a skills-based approach to address evolving workforce needs. Meanwhile, employee activation replaced traditional employee listening, emphasizing continuous feedback to align with business goals.

Pay equity surfaced as a critical issue, with studies revealing that addressing pay disparities significantly impacts employee experience. HR tech stacks also underwent transformation, as AI revolutionized recruitment, employee engagement, and learning strategies. Organizations embraced enterprise talent intelligence to optimize workforce planning and career development, while people analytics remained underutilized, despite its potential to drive strategic decisions.

Finally, 2024 witnessed a growing emphasis on Systemic HR, which integrates disconnected HR functions into a cohesive framework, driving significant business value.

Hybrid Office Success: Smarter Space Management

Effective space management is crucial for hybrid offices, boosting productivity, satisfaction, and cost efficiency.

Unispace's 2024 survey found two-thirds of employees visit offices for focused work but often face inadequate spaces.

As our Future Work Alumnus, Phil Kirschner highlights, thoughtful design enhances functionality and fosters a positive culture, making the office a place employees want to be.

Tools like desk booking systems and feedback-driven adjustments have led to results like a 336% increase in office attendance and a 47% boost in productivity, transforming offices into collaborative, engaging hubs.

Hush Hybrid: The Hidden Remote Work Trend

The "hush hybrid" trend, where managers quietly allow employees to work remotely more than policies permit, is gaining traction as a retention strategy.

According to the findings, 25% of employees prefer working three days on-site, while 39% of managers want their teams in the office five days a week.

This disconnect can harm morale, trust, and workplace culture, with risks like favoritism or even discrimination claims.

Experts suggest clear in-office policies and purposeful "anchor days," where teams collaborate on-site, as solutions to bridge the gap and foster cohesion.

⁉️ What’s Your Take?

  • Should Employees Hold "Secret" Second Jobs? The rise of remote workers secretly juggling two full-time jobs sparks debate. While some argue it maximizes personal income, critics highlight ethical concerns, like reduced availability, eroded workplace trust, and unfair competition for roles. What’s your take—clever hustle or a breach of workplace integrity?
