highlights of the week

Is the Google Killer in the room with us?

We have discussed replacing Google with different AI searches several times, but it might be different this time. OpenAI has announced SearchGPT, the prototype of a “new AI search feature.”

At first glance, it’s similar to Perplexity feature-wise and interface-wise. SearchGPT will give you a direct answer (instead of links) to your question, allow you to ask follow-up questions, and provide visuals to enhance the answer.

What makes it special is:

  • OpenAI has partnered up with publishers and creators, committing to provide clear citations for each response to prevent misinformation.
  • SearchGPT will be a feature integrated into ChatGPT instead of being a separate app.

In a landscape where publishers are suing AI search engines for abusing their copyrighted data, and Reddit is blocking all search engines and AI bots, except for Google, for their questionable purposes of content usage, SearchGPT might have the highest chance to be the new “searching norm” if done properly.

First look at Apple Intelligence

Apple has launched some of the features of Apple Intelligence, which will improve Siri, automatically generate emails, and sort notifications. It’s now only available for developer beta of iOS 18.1.
