Launching “The Workline” Newsletter, Guided by Phil Kirschner

I am thrilled to announce the launch of “The Workline,” a newsletter with actionable, candid advice for anyone trying to create a better experience at work in the face of misaligned incentives and conflicting information.
In this moment of overwhelming clickbait about hybrid work and AI agents, I worry that leaders across HR, IT, RE/FM, and beyond are stuck navigating organizational siloes and don’t know where to turn for directions.
Not for products. Or whitepapers. Or headlines. Or too-distant futures.
They want dot-connecting ideas and authentic stories from a trusted partner who has been on the journey and can help them work across organizational lines to succeed in modern work design.
NOTE: I am 6'5" tall, so my logo is a nod to both my grey hair and ability, literally and figuratively, to see over organizational walls.

What’s in a name?
I named my newsletter “The Workline” for two reasons.
First, there may not be a single definition for “the future of work,” but I am passionate about guiding clients on a path—the literal and figurative directional line—to a better operating system of work.
And then walking it with them for as long as it takes.
Second, I plan to use “___line” words and metaphors as lexical mnemonics, a consistent language framework that makes key ideas easier to recall and apply when they matter most.
For example, here are some topics in my pipeline (pun intended):
- Incentives with “above the line” expenses
- The experience of frontline workers
- Future-forward roles and reporting lines
- Pushing beyond “the red line” in office occupancy
- “Blurred lines” between places and organizations
- Seeing beyond the horizon line, or below the water line
You get the idea.
I’ll share stories from my own experience, observations from clients, and interviews with people sharing ideas you can replicate.
I hope this simple, memorable framework inspires you to subscribe and share The Workline with your peers.
The path to the future of work won’t be a straight line, but I promise not to let you stray too far from it. Thank you for reading, and I look forward to your feedback and engagement.
Why me?
I have been an innovator and data-driven change leader at the intersection of employee experience, real estate, organizational effectiveness, and technology strategy for over 20 years.
At McKinsey & Company, I advised hundreds of executives about the future of work and organizational health.
At WeWork, I had a front-row seat to the pre-pandemic reimagination of workplace culture. At JLL, transformed real estate portfolios.
At Credit Suisse, I co-created a global flexible working and desk-sharing program after starting my career in cybersecurity and expense management.
Paradoxically, I’m an innovator who is grounded in risk and control.
