highlights of the week

You can now use Deep Research without $200

First of all, I would admit it’s a bit embarrassing writing about Perplexity today when I just mentioned in last week’s newsletter how it’s losing the competitive edge against OpenAI.

Perplexity just entered the deep research game with a new freemium product designed to change how we find information online. If you’ve ever felt overwhelmed by endless links or struggled to verify facts, this might be your new go-to tool.

The most wonderful part is, while all Deep Research (from Google, OpenAI, and Perplexity) are supposed to do the same thing, you can now use this feature for free with Perplexity

Here’s what stands out about Perplexity Deep Research:

  • Deep Search Mode: Perplexity scans multiple sources, cross-verifies facts, and provides well-rounded answers instead of just listing links.
  • Quick Response: Most tasks can be completed in under 3 minutes, compared to the 5-30 minutes window of OpenAI.
  • Source Transparency: Every answer comes with citations from credible sources, and also a live log to keep you posted on what it’s doing.
  • Custom Follow-ups: You can ask for clarifications or dive deeper into specific areas—perfect for research projects or market analysis.
  • Freemium Model: Basic access is free (unspecified limit), pro-users have limitless access.

This launch is a direct challenge to Google and OpenAI’s Deep Research, so I ask Perplexity to compare the difference between the three.

Perplexity’s Deep Research feature is winning hearts for being free and accessible to everyone. But with OpenAI now making its Deep Research available to both free and Plus users, it’ll be interesting to see how this shapes the competitive landscape.

For now, would you try out Perplexity’s Deep Research?
