Let’s dive in!
ChatGPT Search is here
And it’s been pretty impressive! ChatGPT recently launched a Search, finally resolving its biggest missing piece - browsing the web in real-time, and with fewer hallucinations.
Should you try out ChatGPT Search? Yes, and here are its key features:
- Real-Time Information Access: ChatGPT can retrieve up-to-date data, such as current events, stock prices, and weather forecasts, ensuring responses reflect the latest information.
- Automatic and Manual Search Initiation: The AI determines when to perform a web search based on the query's nature. Users can also manually trigger a search by clicking the web search icon.
- Source Citations: Responses include links to original sources, allowing users to verify information and further explore topics.
- Interactive Elements: Search results may feature interactive components, such as maps or graphs, enhancing the user experience.
- Integration with News Outlets: Partnerships with major news organizations enable ChatGPT to access a broad range of content, enriching its responses.
For me, the most impressive thing ChatGPT Search can do is give you a customizable and interactive answer to your search query.
Instead of a static list or recommendation articles from TripAdvisor on Google Search, here I can really explore and look for a restaurant of my liking. I can also specify the format for the answer, whether it is a list, bullet points, or a paragraph.
Hence, ChatGPT Search comes in super handy when you need to get a general answer, idea, or knowledge without going through endless links and summarizing the information yourself.
However, I pressed “Change it back” when I saw this box. ChatGPT Search now has a Chrome extension, directing your every search to the ChatGPT chatbox.
My two cents: The ChatGPT Search in ChatGPT is awesome, but not (yet) to the point where I would implement the extension and entirely replace Google Search. Here are some “inconveniences” when installing the extension:
- The news platforms partnered with ChatGPT Search are credible, but I cannot search for content from social media such as Reddit or Quora. These sources have been a big part of my job: reading reviews and social listening.
- You don’t get the external memories when searching. Do you know how with Google Search when you press “li” and Google recommends and directs you to LinkedIn? This is not yet the case for ChatGPT Search.
- Fewer sources mean more biases. ChatGPT Search can give you a comprehensive answer to your questions with around 3-5 citations. Compared to the 10+ pages of results from Google Search, I’d prefer scrolling through as diverse sources and social platforms as possible when researching critical topics.
- Every time you search, ChatGPT will open a new chatbot window, and your sidebar can get cluttered after a while.
Now, ChatGPT Search has been available for paid users, and it will be rolled out for free users in the coming months. Would you replace Google Search with ChatGPT Search?
